just wanted to share about my lovely spontaneous afternoon - having been given the unexpected day off today, i hadnt planned to do anything. it wasnt until after lunch that our new cabin mate, Tricia came in picking up her sunglasses before heading out to Lac Togo and Togoville...before i knew anything i had been invited alone too and was out walking the dock to pick up a taxi on the main road.
Lac Togo is about half an hours drive away (yup it was the usual stare out of the windows not at where your going hairraising kinda driving) towards Benin .(east) arriving at a hotel on the side of the lake we got in a typical fishmans boat and headed out into the lac towards Togoville - an island within the lake.
I love islands - i love the way that they are somewhat different to the pace of life on the 'mainland' and this little island was no different. life was slower - more relaxed and people all seems to know each other. the kids shouted out in their little voices the usual, 'yovo, yovo,' (white person, white person) chuckling to themselves. this time we took some balloons and had some great times interacting with them. mammas we there selling things on their wooden tables and stools. the men were in the process of digging up the road and laying sewers i think. then the goats and chickens wandered about as if the place belonged to them. we spotted the local clinic with its rather unusual HIV health education sign and walked around exploring the little village before our rather windy and rough boat ride back. by that time the dark clouds had come over head threatening rain.
a very pregnant goat waddling about!
