at the beginning of the week we had a hospital onboard that just consisted of a couple of empty wards with sparkling clean floors (from our waxing) and a few other rooms that were packed from floor to ceiling with equipment and stores. Now just a few days later, with commitment and hard work - we have a hospital. a functioning hospital, beds with sheets and pillows ready to receive their occupants, cupboards with the correct supplies in, stock lists updated and correct. the cupboards all labeled to help the new nurses, beds are numbered, toys and teddies at the ready. the wards sit in quietness, in anticipation, ready to receive; the nurses are excited, looking forward to being nurses again, anticipation is all around.
all that is missing are the patients, but that is very very soon about to change, infact in under a week (first patients arrive next wednesday, 24th) the wards will once again become healing places, laughter and music will be seeping out from under the door, down the corridor; little ones will be running around, mamas chatting to each other, taking care of each others children when they're having a tough day, there'll be changing faces; in every single way - from scared and apprehensive, withdrawn and hopeless, to smiles from ear to ear, white teeth, shining eyes and hope and laughter and a future. i am looking forward to these times again. to being a nurse, to begin in Togo, to having the bustling and busy shifts and the quieter more relaxed ones. to be laughed at, to cry with, to have my hand shaken and to give and receive hugs.
this is all about to be and i am excited.
